In 1986 in Gyunggi province of South Korea police finds the body of a young woman raped and strangled in the ditch in the middle of rice fields.
Local police starts the investigation when second body is found nearby. With suspicion that this is work of serial killer two experienced detectives from Seoul, Park Doo-Man and Cho Yong-koo, arrive to the area and begin investigation. While they are not used to conditions in rural area they push the investigation in right direction. At least that is what they thought, because soon more dead bodies are found and the case is getting complicated. Park and Cho work on a theory that murderer must be mad and focus on a young man, who seems to be retarded. They watch him, hoping to find any evidence that would link him to victims, but when that fails they try to force him to confess.
Film based on the real events of serial killer, known as Hwaseong Strangler, who was active in South Korea in 1980s and early 1990s. While based on true story Memories of Murder is a gripping crime movie that keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning till the end. Creators manages to keep the story real and down to earth, while at the same time it’s a rollercoaster that will stick in your mind for a long, long time. One of the best true crime movies ever made, with tense atmosphere.

The killer inentified
In 2019 the real Hwaseong Strangler was identified through DNA match as Lee Choon-jae, who was at that time serving life sentence for rape and murder of his sister-in-law. Later Lee confessed to murders and attacks on women in Hwaseong and nearby areas, however due to statute of limitations he could not be prosecuted for those crimes.
