In 1980s full motion video games (FMV) looked like a perfect way of mixing video games (that struggled with graphical presentation of the gameplay) and movies - real actors were playing scenes that were later compiled so the story could take different routes depending on decisions of the player. In practice it rarely actually worked - the decisions usually had marginal influence on the story itself, however, there were exceptions. Like MysteryDisc: Murder, Anyone?, where 16 different endings were implemented in the game, which at least gave the game above average replayability.
Of course they were still pre-made storylines, so it was not in any way open ending game, but at least the creators made some effort.
