Two US Marshals, Edward Daniels and his new partner Chuck Aule, are sent to Shutter Island in Boston Harbor, where hospital for the criminally insane is located. One of their patients, a woman called Rachel Solando, who killed her three children, has disappeared and is believed to hide somewhere on the island. The hospital staff is unable to locate her and thus the Marshalls had to step in. But none of the staff, especially Dr. John Cawley in charge of the hospital, seems to be very helpful in the investigation - the request for access to personnel data was refused, the staff states they saw nothing, the patients seem to be schooled to tell the same story. But arrival to Shutter Island caused migraines and flashbacks for Daniels, a World War 2 veteran, who saw some horrifying things while liberating Dachau concentration camp. He and Chuck are convinced that the hospital staff are trying to hide something from them, all they need is a good lead to get the investigation started. And then, suddenly, the missing Rachel Solando is found alive and well.
A dark and atmospheric movie directed by Martin Scorsese is surprisingly well made - the atmosphere of old mental hospital is hardly original setting for such story, but incoming storm and multi-layered story create a quite unique combination. It is overall a detective story, with horror-like elements, mystery and depressing atmosphere, where each of the flashbacks add something new to the events and after a while viewer can be as confused as Daniels himself.
