Judge Dee, a new magistrate arrives to the border town of Lan-fang only to find the place in total disarray. Previous magistrates were nothing but puppets in the hands of a local self-proclaimed governor, Chien Mow. It means that a lot of local cases were pushed aside without even being investigated. While preparing to face Chien Mow, Judge Dee stumbles upon one of such cases, regarding inheritance after a famous official. At the same time a young man approaches judge pleading to help his father, who will be murdered soon. As it turns out that man is a son of a once highly regarded general, who after leaving the army, settled down in Lan-fang. In recent times the general became a recluse and suspected everyone around him is plotting to kill him. To makes things easier the son of the general knows exactly who could be trying to jill his father.
One of the early books in Judge Dee series written by Dutch author Robert van Gulik, who based his novels on the traditional Chinese detective stories surrounding their legendary magistrates, who was suppose to be one of the greatest detectives of his times. Just like the texts van Gulik was using as inspiration, his Judge Dee novels have few investigations going on simultaneously and sometimes interwine. Complicated cases, mysterious clues and all of it set in reality of medieval Chinese empire creates a unique expirience.
