The accidental meeting of famous detective Hercule Poirot in Istanbul with a fellow Belgian M. Bouc, director of the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits railway company, have changed the plans of Poirot. His friend convinced him to take the Orient Express to Calais, famous train that his company is in charge of. Detective agrees, but it turns out the express in fully booked and the best Bouc can do to facilitate Poirot is to offer him second-class berth. During the travel Poirot is approached by one of the passengers, American businessman called Samuel Ratchett, who wants to hire him to protect the businessman from someone, who sent anonymous letters stating that he will kill Ratchett. Poirot seems indifferent to the story of American passenger, especially since he is quite evasive while answering any the questions of detective, so the Belgian declines his offer of large sum of money. The following night the Poirot is woken up by noises from the next compartment, occupied by Ratchett, but after a while it is all quiet again. In the morning the train is forced to stop in secluded area due to snowdrift that blocked the tracks and passenger need to wait for rescue to arrive. Ratchett’s valet found him dead in his compartment, stabbed several times, although it looks like he was poisoned as well. Bouc asks Poirot to investigate the case while the train is stuck in the middle of nowhere, hoping it could be solved before the train will reach the next station.
