Original title: Der Name der Rose
The story takes place in the 14th century in Northern Italy. The Franciscan friar, William of Baskerville and his young novice Adso, arrive at a Benedictine abbey, where an important theological Church conference is about to take place. A mysterious death of a young illuminator shocks the monks and is initially determined as a suicide. William, who used to be an inquisitor, confronts the Abbot with his findings, which suggest that it was not a suicide. For the Abbot, suicide would be bad enough, but if some sinister powers were behind that death, it would be even worse. He gives William permission to investigate the circumstances of that death, hoping that it will restore order in the abbey. But his hopes soon are crushed by the discovery of another body - another monk died in circumstances that could have been effects of an accident, but William of Baskerville again has doubts that the death was accidental. Now, with potential two murders on his hands, he will have to use all of his known for his deductive skills to work out who is behind those deaths. Who or what, because there are rumours among the monks that the Devil himself is punishing them for their sins and, as William will soon discover, there are plenty of sins to go around in the abbey.
An unusual film, based upon an unusual book by Umberto Eco - it is a detective story without a real detective, a murder investigation, in which the Devil is the main suspect, plenty of religious suspects, most of which struggle to stick to what their religion teaches. And all of it is set in the cold, stone walls of an abbey, in the gloomy and odious times of the early 14th century. The Name of the Rose might not be for everyone’s taste, but through the unique atmosphere and setting, it is a movie you will remember for a while.
