In 1953 London, The Mousetrap play by Agatha Christie celebrates the 100th performance, but the party is suddenly interrupted by the arrival of the American film director Leo Köpernick. He was hired by a producer, John Woolf to direct the film adaptation of the play, but to put it mildly, he did not get along with the writer, who was in charge of preparing the screenplay. But while Köpernick irritates the people he is supposed to work with, during the party he causes a scene and the leading actor in the play, Richard Attenborough, punches him in the face. Things turn even worse when the body of Leo Köpernick is found on the stage where The Mousetrap was supposed to be played again. The whole cast and people involved in the production are gathered in the building while Constable Stalker awaits the arrival of a police detective, who will take over the investigation. To her surprise, Inspector George Stoppard, who she never met before, arrives at the theatre and starts looking around the crime scene. The victim was most likely killed in the costume room and then moved to the stage, as Constable Stalker informs the Inspector, who seems to be annoyed with her over-zealous nature.
See How They Run is hard to put in a pigeonhole - it is a crime story, but not really, it is a comedy, but only to some point, it is a pastiche of Christie-like detective stories, but on the other hand it is far away from her works. It seems like the creators were going for a comedy crime movie, with a story including real people (like Agatha Christie, Richard Attenborough, John Woolf, Commissioner Harold Scott), which would be a sort-of parody of the Agatha Christie style, but with actual police investigation mixed with the one taking place in the play. The final effect is not great - the comedy bits are rather weak, the chemistry between characters is almost non-existent, the crime story is hardly gripping, and the ending seems completely detached from what happened before in the film. Unfortunately, it is another example of a production full of start when it comes to actors, but what is missing is a good screenplay.
